Amerijet seeks exemption for cargo flights between US and China
Miami-based Amerijet is seeking an exemption from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to conduct scheduled cargo flights between the U.S. and China for at least two years, due to growing demand for Asia-Pacific capacity.
“During this period of unusual global supply chain disruption, we continue to survey the air cargo landscape and see an ever-increasing demand for Asia-Pacific capacity, which encourages us to apply for rights to serve China so we are ready and able to add capacity as customers request it,” an Amerijet spokesperson told Air Cargo World.

Once approved, Amerijet can seek further licenses and arrangements in China, although it remains unclear where else the carrier will fly.
“We will continue to review markets and have not made any final decisions at this time,” the spokesperson said. “Ultimately, our customers will make the final determination on markets served.”
Airports in China have been facing ongoing airfreight disruptions since March as COVID-19 outbreaks have sparked government-mandated lockdowns, significantly reducing volumes to and from the country. Still, cargo operations in Shanghai continue to be impacted due to ongoing quarantine measures, while additional cities have also been implementing COVID-19 restrictions throughout, including Taicang, Wenzhou, Yiwu and others.
The U.S. also reinstated a cap on charter flights between the U.S. and China Zone 1 cities in March 2021, further limiting capacity between the two countries from August 2021 through July 31, 2022.
Amerijet has been looking to grow its network and provide additional capacity and recently began operating new 757-200Fs. Currently, Amerijet’s network includes 476 destinations across Europe, Asia-Pacific, South Africa and the Middle East, according to the company’s website. In addition to the 757s, Amerijet operates eight 767-300BDSFs and six 767-200BDSFs.
