DHL Express adds second Tampa-area facility

DHL Express is expanding its presence in the Tampa, Fla., area with a new facility in St. Petersburg, less than 4 miles from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE).

The facility includes 30,400 square feet of warehouse and office space, with about 40 courier load positions, and handles U.S. domestic as well as time-definite international shipments, according to a release today from DHL. The $4 million facility has a processing capacity of up to 3,000 pieces per hour.

While DHL Express’ primary operations in Florida occur at its Miami (MIA) regional hub, the integrator had previously grown its Tampa-area operations during the past five years. In 2018, DHL invested $5 million in the area when it relocated to a 35,000-square-foot facility to double its footprint in the Tampa-St. Petersburg region. Historically, that facility has been served by road service connecting to DHL’s air network out of Orlando International Airport (MCO), about 100 miles east of Tampa.

However, an air expansion is on the horizon for the integrator. The Tampa and St. Petersburg facilities will have their own service from DHL Express’ hubs at Cincinnati (CVG) and MIA, with service areas divided by cities and ZIP codes, a spokesman confirmed to Air Cargo World.

“The company’s expansion in St. Petersburg was an ideal location, strategically located near an airport which provides us the flexibility we need as we grow our air network,” Richard Saavedra, VP and general manager for DHL Express in the Southeast U.S., said in the release. DHL Express’ international shipments from the area have increased by about 18% during the past three years, he said.

The choice to divide services between the two Tampa-area locations offers its own benefits that upsizing the existing Tampa facility wouldn’t necessarily offer, according to DHL’s spokesman. Beyond providing more location options for customer pick-up and drop-off, first deliveries will depart about half an hour earlier than under the single facility operation, cut-off times for pick-ups will be extended, and operations will be more sustainable due to fewer total miles traveled by couriers across multiple routes, rather than under a single-point network.

The Air Cargo Tech Summit, the new airfreight logistics event presented by Air Cargo World, will take place live in Miami from June 6-7. Learn more and register here.
