The FAA announced $1.9 billion in grants today to improve airports throughout the United States and its territories, with $84.4 million allocated for sustainable technologies.
(Courtesy/FAA)The money will go to 519 projects in 48 states and other territories, including Guam, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, according to a release from the FAA.
Areas of focus include “airport safety, sustainability improvements and airport noise reduction in airports of all sizes and across all parts of the country,” the release stated.
“This funding helps ensure traveler safety, reduces the environmental impacts on communities and builds more resilient airports nationally,” FAA Associate Administrator of Airports Shannetta R. Griffin said in the release.
Along with IATA, the White House has set a goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050 as a part of the Biden administration’s long-term strategy.
Sustainability projects funded in the latest round of grants include, according to the release:
$29.1 million to St. Louis/Lambert International Airport (STL) for the purchase and installation of zero-emissions equipment, including an electric sweeper and charging station;
$20.4 million to Muskegon County Airport (MKG) in Michigan for installation of zero-emissions vehicles and chargers;
$15.1 million to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) for the installation of 11 zero-emissions vehicles and four chargers;

Remaining funds will be distributed for infrastructure improvements, taxi and runway repair or redesign, airport noise reduction, air quality remediation and safety, according to the release.
Today’s announcement follows a $269 million award for 62 projects at 56 airports throughout the U.S. announced in 2023.
