Kalitta Charters II to add second DHL CMI 737-800

DHL Express continues to accumulate 737-800 freighters for its U.S. operations and will place its second 737-800BDSF with Kalitta Charters II this year.

The freshly converted 2001-vintage freighter (28325, ex-Scandinavian Airlines) arrived in Ypsilanti, Mich. (YIP) on Oct. 5, after being ferried to Tianjin (TSN) in March for conversion with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) at the Haite facility.

Kalitta Charters II received its first DHL 737-800BDSF (28318) — also an ex-Scandinavian Airlines aircraft — in July and recently began commercial service with it in September. Unit 28318 was also the the first 737-800BDSF to undergo conversion in Europe after IAI announced plans in 2021 to add a conversion line at the Atitech facility in Naples (NAP).

The airline also operates one 737-400SF in CMI service for DHL.

The express integrator initially placed its first batch of 737NG conversions with Miami-based iAero Airways, which now has a total of five DHL-owned 737-800BDSFs in its fleet.

Meanwhile, Spain-based Swiftair is the first European carrier to begin 737-800F CMI service for DHL. The airline currently operates three 737-800BDSFs on behalf of the express company.

As it stands, there are currently nine DHL-owned 737-800BDSFs in operation and two sister ships (28326 and 28327, both ex-Scandinavian Airlines) currently in conversion with IAI. Unit 28327 was ferried to NAP on Feb. 20 for conversion while unit 28326 arrived at TSN in June ahead of its induction.

Kalitta Charters II was not immediately available for comment.
